Ever been stressed on that report that you have to submit the next day? Or an exam that’s coming
up? What about completing a task that your boss assigned you a month ago with the deadline
being right around the corner? Perhaps, spending time with your loved ones would bring about a
sense of calm in your mind? Whether it be a significant experience of trauma or something as
small as getting jittery nerves before a presentation, we all have faced an exertion on our mental
health in different forms. The state of mental well-being in which people cope with the stress
of life, learning well and working while contributing to their community can be termed as mental health.
Just as one’s physical health must be taken care of, equal importance must be given to the mind
as well. However, in some societies, the discussion around mental health is still regarded as a
taboo topic. Mental health can be addressed on a more complex spectrum than circulating only
around mental disorders. Each person may experience a mental health condition at varying
degrees considering factors like their environment and social lifestyle. Ultimately, people with
mental health conditions are more likely to experience a negative mindset and mental well-being.
People are more likely to suffer from mental health disorders when they are exposed to
unfavorable social, economic, and environmental conditions, such as poverty, violence,
inequality and environmental deprivation. They can be susceptible to mental health issues due to
a variety of individual psychological and biological characteristics, including emotional
intelligence, substance abuse, and even genetics. Despite being exposed to a risk factor, the
majority of people do not go on to acquire a mental health illness, while many people who have
no known risk factor still do so.

The impact mental health can have on one’s education can vary from person to person. The state
of one’s mind can have an effect on their education and performance. Studies show that people
with good mental health can focus better as they have higher levels of concentration, are more
motivated and optimistic, and have a tendency to be resilient, which can make learning and
achieving easier. On the other hand, people with poor mental health may struggle with mental
health challenges such as depression, anxiety, stress, low self-esteem. This can impede cognitive
functioning, memory, attention and mood. The type of environment also influences one’s
education. Learning and wellbeing can be enhanced by a pleasant and supportive school
environment, but may be hindered by a stressful setting.
The way how a person interacts and communicates with others is prompted by their
psychological well being. Having good mental health leads to more positive and longer lasting
relationships while people suffering from mental disorders or conditions may experience
difficulties in trusting, communicating with others and lead to misunderstandings. Some people
may be hesitant to disclose information about their mental illness due to the stigma around it.
Relationships can have a negative impact on a person’s mental health under certain
circumstances, such as when they are toxic or abusive.

Moreover, a person’s capacity to work and achieve their career goals might be impacted by their
mental health. Those with poor mental health may experience issues like burnout and turnover,
while those with better mental health are more likely to have higher levels of creativity,
productivity, contentment, and engagement at work. The work environment can also have an
impact on mental health, a safe and healthy workplace can advance professional growth and
well-being, while a dangerous and unhealthy workplace can have the opposite effect.
When addressing mental health, it is not something to be considered in a fixed state, the mental
well-being of people is dynamic and fluctuates depending on the situation and lifestyle As such,
it’s critical to look after one’s mental health, ask for assistance when necessary, and offer support
to those who might also be experiencing mental health.
