This is yet another successful venture carried out by the Rotaract Club of the Faculty of Science, University of Colombo for the 18th time in a row, where an effort has been made to uplift the deprived and differently abled children with this significant service. Going above and beyond their usual activities, the project of this year had a new dimension where three stages were included: companionship, education, and sustainable community development.
Phase 1: Playful Promises
The first phase of the project was called Playful Promises, where visits were done to Sri Jinananda Children’s Home thrice. By engaging in art, games, songs, and other activities, long-lasting relationships were built up to create a safe and fun environment where every child is appreciated and celebrated.
Phase 2: Gift Of Hope
Phase 02, on the other hand, was named Gift of Hope, which went to Hellabeem Rehabilitation Centre, Weligama, to make donations and raise awareness about the centre that is doing wonders in developing differently-abled children through rehabilitation and vocational training.
Phase 3: Days Of Smiles
Days of Smiles marked the end of the project by organizing an educational field trip to the Colombo National Museum and “Ape Gama” museum for the children of Sevana Special School and Child Care Centre. This day was packed with education, entertainment, music, and laughter, offering many children their first chance to explore such culturally rich venues and creating experiences to remember forever.
Such events could only happen due to many successful fundraising activities, including a community car wash, university stalls, sponsorships, and donations. Altogether, the project managed to impact more than 90 children, making a contribution to the Rotary Areas of Focus of Maternal and Child Health and Disease Prevention and Treatment, as well as helping to address the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals related to Good Health and Well-being (SDG 3), Quality Education (SDG 4), and Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10).
Project Sevana proves that the power of compassion, determination, and teamwork can make wonders happen. Not only did Project Sevana become a community service activity, but it became a promise of every child’s right to have a chance to learn, develop, and enjoy. While one chapter of Project Sevana draws to an end, Project Sevana remains full of hope and continues to work for the bright future of its children.
