The wild doesn’t fade in captivity. It waits to be understood.
WILDERVERSE is an animal welfare initiative driven by a simple belief. When animals can think, explore, and express their natural behaviours, their quality of life improves. Through creativity, science, and compassion, Wilderverse aims to bridge the gap between captive environments and the instincts animals carry within them.
Phase 01 of Wilderverse focused on behavioral enrichment at the National Zoological Gardens, Dehiwala, and was completed this year. Over several weeks, the team carefully designed and carried out enrichment activities for a wide range of species. There were kangaroos, emus, cassowaries, porcupines, jackals, fishing cats, jungle cats, macaws, lions, leopards, tigers, and spider monkeys. These enrichments encouraged natural behaviors such as foraging, climbing, problem-solving, scent tracking, and social interaction. Simple materials, thoughtful planning, and close coordination with zoo authorities helped turn everyday enclosures into spaces of curiosity and engagement.
With Phase 01 completed, Wilderverse has now moved into Phase 02, which focuses on education and awareness. This phase involves an educational video documentary series highlighting selected animals at the zoo, with special attention given to endangered species. The videos aim to share each animal’s story, behaviour, and conservation importance in a way that is easy to understand and engaging for the public. Through visual storytelling, Phase 02 seeks to inspire empathy, awareness, and responsibility towards wildlife conservation.
Wilderverse continues to grow as a project that blends learning with action. Whether through hands on enrichment or informative storytelling, it remains committed to making a meaningful difference.
