Out of all the questions that have met my ears repetitively, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” and “What do you want to do in the future?” got me
thinking the most. Looking back, it certainly is amusing how the answers of the 5-year-old me and the 15-year-old me contradicted. Why do we limit our possibilities as we grow up? Does our creativity reduce over time or are we forced to fit into a frame referred to as convention? At the end of a long day, beneath the drizzle poured by the knob fixed to the white wall, a chain of thoughts awakened by past experiences led me to dive deeper into the depths of “what if”.
In an infinite ocean of possibilities, we are only limited by our own imagination. We are constantly being told that you can only go as far as your imagination lets you and yet, as we mature we realize that imagination shares only a portion of the distance of our journey. With time, we encounter many obstacles in our path and come across many detours as well and to overcome them, one needs the capability to work hard, persistence and rational thinking. Dreams become plans only if we put effort into them, hence rather than just being a dreamer, it is indeed noteworthy to be a creator.
Even if most of the possibilities we encounter are bound by the superficiality of the world, even if the words ‘what if’ carry a hint of doubt, even if you feel fear and uncertainty with what ifs, if you harvest energy you will definitely receive a satisfying yield. Just like how beauty lies in the eye of the beholder, the paintbrush lies in your hand to paint the blank canvas we call ‘life’. Fear of failure, fear of judgement, and fear of regret never cease completely and there will be remnants of fear laying in the deepest places in our minds, no matter what the circumstances are but despite the lingering feeling of doubt, we should not let fear own us and limit our capabilities.
It is true that not everything that’s seemingly possible would be doable and hence it is also important to note that not all that’s said to be impossible is undoable. It all lies in perspective and capability. And in that light, an epiphany led me to be engulfed by a surge of emotions and a wave of courage. Hence it is important to explore what ifs. Be fascinated by them. In a world full of people where the majority sees the glass as half empty, being someone who may view it different is praiseworthy. What ifs are for the dreamers, for the creators and for those who possess the ability to make a change in seemingly impossible situations.
