“Joy of a Smile” was a community service project carried out by the Rotaract Club of Faculty of Science, University of Colombo on 19th of December at the Wajira Sri orphanage, Pitakotte. It was around 8.30 am when we arrived at the orphanage. The programme began with a brief introduction about the Rotaract Club, to the children of the orphanage. With the enthusiastic participation of the club members, we were able to conduct many games with the little ones.
“Memory Tray” was our first game and they were given a tray with different kinds of things related to Christmas and told each of them to prepare a list of things they saw in the tray within 2 minutes. It was rather funny when we realized that some children were mentioning things that weren’t even in the tray.
Then we played “Bingo”. The children were given Bingo sheets containing numbers and asked them to mark the numbers that we recited. They were rather excited with this game. Thereafter an “Art Competition” was held. Not only the children of the orphanage but some of our fellow Rotaractors, took this as an opportunity to showcase their talents.
Then a demonstration about Christmas day celebrations was carried out. We concluded the programme by offering Christmas gifts to children by a Rotaractor dressed as Santa Clause, and singing Christmas Carols with them. We all carried beautiful memories as well as the joy of smile in our hearts, as we left the orphanage.
