On 27th August 2015 with so much of hopes and responsibilities Rtr Basura Perera and his board of directors were handed over the Rotaract club of faculty of science for a beautiful journey, for the year 2014/ 2015. For January 2016; this month, it has been already 5/6 months and all I could recall are the beautiful memories of all the projects we worked together to light up the theme “Outshine together to serve humanity”. I could call past months , a period with filled and overflowing humanity and happiness because of the memories of beautiful faces whom we were able to make happy and joyful.
We started our journey with the project “meals on wheels” on 28th July 2015 which we shared meals with the poor people we found on roads. All we wanted was to give them a pleasure by sharing a good meal and make them happy. With the participation of about hundred of rotaractors we were able to distribute more than hundred lunch packets. With helping poor people to fulfill their one of the basic need and stay one day without hunger We finished our first project with so much of joy in our hearts.
Next we launched a T shirt designing competition as for the first time by the Rotaract club of the Faculty of Science, University of Colombo to celebrate the Rotaract, looking for fresh talent from the Young Rotaractors in Sri Lanka. We received many designs with so much of enthusiasm and with so much of hard a winning design was selected. The T shirt with that wining design will be published and launched tomorrow ; 9th January at the opening ceremony of Rotaract Champion’s League hosted by the Rotaract club of Faculy to Science, University of Colombo and some other Rotaract clubs.
To develop International Understanding, The presidents from the Rotaract clubs of Faculty of Science, Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Law and Faculty of Management and Finances of University of Colombo gathered together and proposed to conduct a mass #OTW (On the Way) workshop for the students of University of Colombo to educate them on gender equality and sexual harassment. On 20th August , Naushalya Rajapaksha, the youth delegation of Sri Lanka (UNPFA representative) conducted the OTW workshop. Miss. Naushalya suggested that having a TOT session (as phase 1) prior to mass workshop would make it easy to handle the people at the workshop. Then it was decided to hold Training of Trainers (TOT) session for 10 members from each club at the UN compound on 20th 0f August. At TOT the day began with ice breaker session called “Ice Ice Baby“in which everyone explained how being a guy or a girl prevented them from doing some of the activities. After that there was a session called “sex boxing” and every one had to explain what they expected in their ideal girlfriend/ boy friend. After interesting period of sharing different ideas that rotaractors have, Miss. Naushalya explained how these ideas affect on gender equality and sexual harassment and then she briefed about what other sessions will be conducted on the mass workshop and how should we as rotaractors should change our attitude and help others look on these issues on different perspective and help to prevent these issues.
Our next idea of good work was spending a one day with elders at ” lankadara elder’s home” . It was one of our heart full effort to make them forget their all worries and pains at least for a one day.22nd of August many young rotaractors sacrifised their daily routing to give these elders a new experience and make them happy by doing various activities with them. Its the same routine they do every day but with our presence there they got a huge change from everyday routine which made them more happier and we could see that glamour in their eyes .Girls and boys helped them for their lunch and the day ended with the evening singing sessions which was the most joyful events and talents of these elders came out in action. Some elders danced and some sand songs. It was another day with kindness and humanity.
As our next approach we decided to spread love and compassion among differently abled children and adults and spent a splendid day with them.On 31st of October with so much of love we all went to “preethipura” children’s home and started our picnic or journey rarther.Lots of smiley faces greeted us with hearts filled of the hope of having a day full of happiness. After spending the entire day playing singing dancing with them and feeding them, all it was their thank giving and feelings of gratitudes which made us more happier. .Tears were pouring among many of the rotaractors as they spoke.Every child expressed their thank giving as they could, which made us come back with tears and with the thoughts of having a successful day of love offered and kindness.
To enhance the fellowship and cherish the moments of our Rotaract Journey, we went on a club outing. After having a delicious lunch at Rtr Nadeesha’s home the Rotaractors went for a stroll at Henarathgoda Botanical Gardens. While enjoying the scenery Rtr. Pathum came up with some amazing entertainment items which everyone enjoyed. All the Rotaractors had an amazing time sharing their stories.Apart from the talent and dedication, it was the team spirit and cheerful nature that brought the rotaractors success.
When we look back at our journey so far all I see is happiness, kindness , joy and success and mostly team spirit. I should not forget our president Rtr Basura Perera who is the most extravagant leader guiding all us for this beautiful journey and Secretary Rtr Navindra Keerthisinghe who is the giant supportive hand behind all our success. At last but not least I am thankful for all the bored members and fellow rotaractors who have been with the Rotaract club in making all these projects memorable and colorful.
Our journey is not end. Much more cherishing events coming up. So dear fellow readers. Be with us and share the joy of our beautiful destinations.
