With information being the new money, data analytics has become the universal language of advancement. It symbolizes the art of deriving meaning from complexity, going beyond statistics and spreadsheets, whether it is forecasting changes in the market, improving public health initiatives, or customizing instruction. In addition to technical expertise, this analytical revolution necessitates strategic vision and innovative problem-solving.

The Rotaract Clubs of the University of Moratuwa and the Faculty of Science at the University of Colombo responded to this change by launching Data Storm in 2019, a first-of-its-kind project that connects academic theory with practical data difficulties. Participants are immersed in real-world business problems where Python scripts and regression models must be translated into concrete solutions, redefining traditional learning.
As a continuation of the history, Data Storm 6.0 began with an informative series of webinars featuring industry experts, during which attendees acquired critical insights into upcoming technologies and problem-solving frameworks. This was followed by rigorous screening rounds that examined technical skills using real-world case studies, limiting the field to the most promising teams.
Industry expert Mr. Aadil Illyas led Masterclass 2.0 on Advanced Applications of Machine Learning in Business Analytics to sharpen the finalists’ skills, while OCTAVE mentors offered individualized advice during special sessions on May 27-28. These preliminary stages create the groundwork for an outstanding conclusion by providing participants with both cutting-edge technical capabilities and insightful industry perspectives.
The stage was set for an electrifying conclusion as DataStorm’s top 10 teams faced off in the ultimate test of innovation and technical prowess on the 31st of May 2025. After months of intense competition, only the most brilliant solutions remained standing in this battle of wits and creativity. Rubert Peiris Hall at the University of Moratuwa buzzed with excitement as finalists presented their presentations to a distinguished panel of judges comprising Dr. Sandareka Wickremanayake, Dr. Sumani Rajadurai, Dr. Sameera Viswakula, and Mr. Aadil Illyas.
Tension was in the air as teams competed to outdo one another while defending AI-powered sustainability solutions and much more.

After impressive live presentations and rigorous Q&A sessions, Team “Data Sync” emerged as champions, while “Error 404” and “Cognic AI” secured first and second runners-up positions. With participation from over 220 students across Sri Lanka’s universities, DataStorm 6.0 successfully nurtured a new generation of tech talent, leaving a lasting impact on the country’s innovation ecosystem.
Initiatives like Data Storm are transforming entire industries rather than only preparing graduates, as businesses depend more and more on data fluency. Supply chains will be optimized tomorrow by the algorithms created today. This is the true legacy: a generation that is capable of using data as an instrument for transformation rather than just interpreting it.
The adventure is only getting started for the winners. DataStorm has once again demonstrated its ability to create careers and turn creative ideas into tangible effects by providing incubation support, cash prizes, and direct connections to leading software companies.
