
Spark X is a dynamic project organized by the Rotaract Club of Faculty of Science, University of Colombo, designed to enhance creativity and essential skills. From mastering IT and editorial finesse to perfecting PR strategies and photography artistry, Spark X empowers participants to shine brighter in every avenue of expertise. The project unfolded in two phases. The first phase featured workshops focused on teaching the basics of IT, editorial, PR, and photography skills. In the second phase, special guest speakers conducted informative sessions on these same areas, providing deeper insights.
In the first phase, held during July and August, participants attended an IT workshop where they learned the basics of design, editing, digital art, video editing, and motion graphics using tools like Canva and Photoshop. In the Editorial workshop, participants were taught the art of writing captions and blogging. The photography workshop provided participants with valuable insights into editing, innovative techniques, and the art of capturing stunning moments. It equipped them with the skills to turn any event into a memorable experience through beautiful snapshots. The PR workshop provided valuable insights into effectively managing and enhancing the public image of individuals, brands, and organizations. Several fun games were organized during the workshop series to keep things lively. They encouraged participants to stay engaged, build new connections, and form lasting friendships.

The second phase of Spark X unfolded as an engaging series of online workshops conducted by esteemed guest speakers from the industry. The UI/UX Design Workshop held on the 18th of January featured Mr. Ravindu Sasanka, an Associate UX Designer at Amplifyn Pvt. Ltd., an alumnus of UCSC, and a former Chair of the IEEE Student Branch of UCSC. With over 40 participants in attendance, the session offered valuable insights into the world of technology and design, leaving attendees enriched with many new things.
The Editorial Workshop held on the 21st of January featured Mr. Akhila Seneviratne, a prominent Sportswriter for srilankasports.com, the owner of thesidelines.lk, and a Data Engineer at South Asian Technologies. Drawing from his extensive experience, including his former roles as the Head of Editorial at MoraSpirit and Family Coordinator for the RAC Alumni of the University of Moratuwa, Mr. Seneviratne shared invaluable guidance on blogging and crafting a successful career as a writer.
The final workshop of the second phase, the Graphic Designing Workshop, took place on the 12th of February, featuring Mr. Ravindu Nishaditha as the guest speaker. A graduate of the Department of Integrated Design, University of Moratuwa, he is deeply passionate about research and multidisciplinary design, constantly exploring innovative solutions. As a dedicated freelancer, he has worked across diverse creative fields, bringing a wealth of experience to the session. Participants had the opportunity to gain valuable insights into graphic design, from the fundamentals to advanced techniques, making it an enriching and inspiring experience. All workshops were met with enthusiasm and proved to be enriching experiences, empowering participants to further their skills and aspirations.
Through Spark X, we successfully emphasized the significance of skill development and showcased diverse career paths across various fields. Life is a journey, and it’s too short to hold back. This initiative inspired participants to explore new opportunities and unlock their inner creativity, creating the way for personal and professional growth.
